The Journey Of Creating The Packaging Design

Beer cans were designed to be themed after two haunted locations with an important history to the city. Here you can see both designs in 3D and flat labels. (Flora Hall Is Only Featured For Portfolio Purposes Only. This Is Not A Real Product.) The can designs were then placed on models in Cinema 4D and animated. The labels were illustrated in Adobe Illustrator and follow LCBO label guidelines.

With extensive research on Ottawa's history and on haunted locations two beer can concepts were decided. The locations were Saintlo Jail Hostel and Laurier House. Then several sketches were created based on the concepts.  For Saintlo Inmate Ale an illustration based off one of the jail's entrances was decided. The colours for each can were chosen to contrast the other.  For King Séance Pilsner the window view of the spirit was decided based on the rumours that the previous owner participated in séances.

Once can concepts were decided the creation of the package design was done in Adobe Illustrator with their chosen palette. Design was created with exact measurements and to fit LCBO guidelines.  Fonts were chosen to match the locations the cans were based on. After final details and sketches were added, the cans were created in cinema 4d and animated to showcase the can's final designs.

Motion Marketing Video

The goal of the video advertisement was to play as a YouTube ad. The style of the motion piece was to fit the overall theme. The video starts off with the individual cans and animated visuals from their design. The two cans clash to represent the explosion of flavour. The focus was to convince viewers to try the new hauntingly good flavours. The target audience was young adults located in the Ottawa area or tourists visiting the city.

Overall, I enjoyed this project and the challenge. Working in Cinema 4D was a unique experience that really brought the label design to life. The illustrations were fun to create, and the research was really interesting. I enjoyed doing target audience research and applying it to my work.
